Kate Ritchie

People young and old all over the world know and love Kate Ritchie for the key role she has played in the international hit series Home and Away. As one of the only remaining original cast Kate, has played Summer Bay’s adorable Sally Fletcher for a staggering 4000 episodes.

18 years of playing a leading role on such a high profile soap and therefore being a regular visitor to millions of lounge rooms around the globe, has won Kate a place in the hearts of viewers of all ages. Kate has fans in countries all over the world, and a prestigious place in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest serving actor on an Australian Drama Series.

This extraordinary exposure over such an extended career has also had an astonishing impact on Kate’s own life. At just 26 Kate Ritchie is already considered a veteran of the Australian television industry and understands why so many people strongly identify with her and the character she plays.

“Millions of people have watched me grow up on television. The issues Sally has worked through were probably a mirror image of what they were going through in everyday life.”

“Sally has had to deal with everything from puberty and boyfriends, to family trauma and eating disorders and never compromised her strong character attributes."

“Young women in particular closely identify with Sally’s story and the solid role model that she is. I know from the letters and emails I receive that this is an extremely positive thing.”

Audience research shows that Kate is well recognised, highly regarded and trusted. For 18 years she has managed to hold down what she considers to be ‘the best job in the world’, an aspirational position for the millions of young women who watch and enjoy the show.

Kate is ambitious, articulate, and effervescent. She describes herself as outgoing, and at times a little impatient. She is a passionate perfectionist who gets great satisfaction from the work that she does, despite the often-gruelling schedule.

Growing up in the public eye has brought it’s challenges. Kate fulfilled all her career demands while simultaneously attending school, studying for exams, dealing with all the normal things that kids grow through to become adults. She learned her lines, answered her fan mail, promoted Home & Away and all the while learned to cope with the inevitable recognition and fame with a maturity beyond her years.

Now as an adult, Kate cherishes the time that she spends with her family and close friends and continues to handle life in the international spotlight after almost two decades. Living by the ocean in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, Kate’s home is her refuge. When she finds time for herself you will often find her in the kitchen cooking up a storm.

A genuine romantic, Kate’s favourite book is Memoires of a Geisha. She was swept away by the writing, the exquisite imagery, the character beautifully drawn. She happily admits to being a “big mush-bucket” and loves a great love song. When asked to name a movie that moved her recently she will probably tell you “Lost in Translation.”
